Until the mid 1800’s the small market town of Swindon was used mainly for the barter trade. The original town is now known as Old Town. With the arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1840 a new town was created between the railway works and Swindon Hill (now Swindon Town Centre).

Lydiard Park is part of an estate, which belonged to the St John family, the Viscounts Bolingbroke, for over 500 years up until 1943. It was then rescued from ruin by the Swindon Corporation who restored the Palladian House and opened it to the public in the 1950’s. In 2005 work began on the landscape restoration project, to date many significant 18th century landscape and architectural features have been restored.
