ballooning over Wales

Balloon flights over  the Usk and Wye Valleys

Once again
Do I behold these steep and lofty cliffs,
That on a wild secluded scene impress
Thoughts of more deep seclusion; and connect
The landscape with the quiet of the sky

Lines Composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey, 13 July 1798

— William Wordsworth – who would have loved, we're sure, to have seen the beautiful Wye Valley from the tranquillity of a hot air balloon.

Ballooning over Tintern Abbey

Arguably the most romantic river valley in Wales, a balloon flight in the Wye Valley takes you over an Area of Outstanding National Beauty that has been an inspiration for the nation's most visionary poets and artists.

Ancient broadleaf and conifer woodlands line the steep valley sides, a haven for wildlife and truly beautiful in late summer and autumn as the leaves turn from rich green to soft reds, yellows and golds.

Fly the Celtic Trail, over the unmistakable undulations of Offa's Dyke, the 8th century construction built by the powerful King Offa of Mercia to mark the boundary to his Kingdom. Float above ancient castles and enjoy views that extend over the hills and mountains of the Brecon Beacons and some of ballooning most spectacular sunsets. Other magnificent settings include Llandegfedd Reservoir, White Castle, the famous book town of Hay-on-Wye and the beautiful Blorenge mountain that towers over Abergavenny.

We love it so much we've now got four fabulous launch sites…

Tintern

Tintern Abbey, one of the most picturesque and romantic sites in all Wales was an inspiration for both Wordsworth and Turner who produced a selection of fabulous water colours from sketches he made there. We take off in a field right next to this magnificent 12th century abbey, with its wide arches and massive sandstone columns.

Raglan Castle

South Wales is notable for its wild mountain scenery and striking castles, none more splendid perhaps than Raglan Castle, surrounded by fortress defences. Dating from the mid 15th century, it was among the last of the 'true' castles to be built.

Monmouth

Reportedly the birth place of Henry V, (that's the Henry notable for a famous victory at Agincourt) Monmouth is a pretty medieval town with a colourful history. Taking off from the banks of the river Wye just outside the walls, you may see the ruined tower where Henry was supposedly born.

Chainbridge and the Usk Valley

This is a beautiful setting on the banks of the River Usk, which while less well known than the Wye Valley matches it for beauty and stunning scenery. It flows from its source in the Brecon Beacons National Park through Brecon and along a broad valley that separates the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains.

Our balloon flights take off near the Chainbridge Inn nestled not surprisingly next to a famous chain bridge that spans the river at this point. With cosy log fires, flagstones and a friendly welcome, it's the perfect spot for a sociable rendezvous after a pleasant evening's flying.
